Chani*, a mother with two young children, was feeling alone and helpless. No one in her stable and close-knit community knew that her husband was suffering with sex addiction, which was creating severe tension and unrest in their home.

Having seen one of our Facebook posts, Chani called Amudim, distressed that her husband was refusing to seek help; she did not know where to go from there or how to continue in her marriage. An Amudim case manager did the intake and discussed the possibility of Chani seeing a therapist on her own, explaining how it could be beneficial for both her and her husband and provide some much needed support.

This was something within Chani’s control; she immediately agreed as she felt that was her last hope at saving her family from being torn apart. The case manager set Chani up with a therapist and provided her with a list of support groups.

Since beginning treatment, Chani reports that although her husband still refuses to get help, she has found peace of mind and a feeling of empowerment that had been absent since she learned of her husband’s addiction. She notes that the support groups and her therapist have taught her how to live with her husband’s addiction while still making it a priority to take care of herself, so that she can lead a happy and productive life-for herself and her family.

We hope that Chani’s decision to get help will open the door to her husband’s willingness to begin therapy as well; but since we know that addiction is a disease that impacts an entire family, we sometimes need to begin with baby steps, even if the person himself is not ready to face inner demons and seek out help. If you know of someone struggling because of a close relative or friend’s addiction or pain, remember that he/she needs support more than ever, and that Amudim is here to help.
